Explore the map below to discover where same-sex relationships are criminalized and where they are protected. In the next phase of the project, we will be linking to the relevant statutes and legislation so you can read for yourself how the laws are phrased. It is not always clear whether the law applies to LGBT individuals; and in some countries, there are laws that could arguably be used against LGBT individuals coexisting with laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
The map is color-coded as follows: countries that are colored red are countries that criminalize same-sex sexual activity. Dark red countries are those that allow the death penalty in certain circumstances. Yellow countries neither prohibit nor protect same-sex sexual activity (or they are ambiguous due to the presence of laws criminalizing conduct as well as laws outlawing discrimination). Green countries are those where same-sex relationships are both legal and protected.
